Editorial Writing and Editorial Cartooning

Editorial Writing and Editorial Cartooning

Editorial Writing is a way of communicating opinions or observations to an audience, typically through news articles and editorials in newspapers.

Cartoonists use words and pictures to comment on current events, personalities, science and technology. Editorial cartoonists try to comment on subjects that are not as well covered by the newspaper’s journalistic agenda. Cartoonists may also work for “opinion magazines,” which are magazines featuring cartoons throughout their pages rather than stories.

Cartoonist’s goals vary depending on their subject matter or content with some cartooning being pure commentary of social issues or political commentary with no element of humor involved. While others may be specifically designed to educate on a certain subject matter such as health care or finance.

Cartoonists, particularly editorial cartoonists, often use humor to make a point, rather than the more traditional illustrative approach. They may also work for “opinion magazines,” which are magazines featuring cartoons throughout their pages rather than stories.

The first cartoonist to regularly have their drawings published was Thomas Nast in his magazine “Harper’s Weekly” in the United States during the late 1860s. He was followed by Thomas Thew and George Herriman, both of whom regularly employed political cartooning to make a point.

The popularity of editorial cartoonists grew in the American newspaper industry from the 1870s to the 1920s. In this period, magazine cartooning such as that produced by Max and Moritz Nazi (Max and Moritz GrĂ¼n) and Franz von Bayros flourished. In this period, political cartoons appeared more frequently in American periodicals than elsewhere in the world.

While cartoons about politics were not censored during this time, anti-Semitic caricatures began to appear toward the end of these print media’s heyday, particularly during World War I.
