News and Writing the News: How Much Should You Know?
News and Writing the News. If you want to be a journalist, one of the first things you might need to know is how much you should know about current events. The answer is that there’s no such thing as too much knowledge when it comes to reporting on current events, but there are always topics that journalists should have a better understanding of than readers would expect them to have.
These can range from foreign policy, economics, or even pop culture if necessary. Journalists are essentially educators who write the news for their readership and there’s nothing wrong with that. The public deserves to be informed, but they also deserve to hear it from someone who actually knows what they’re talking about.
Journalists Should Know Something About Everything
The first thing journalists should know is that they should know something about everything. You can’t cover the news if you have no idea what’s going on in the world around you and what’s happened in the past. You need to keep up with current events on a local, national and international level and understand exactly how certain issues like politics or economics affect readers from different walks of life. It doesn’t hurt to know a little bit about popular culture too.
How Much Should You Know?
Once you’re fully an educated journalist, the question always seems to be “how much should I know?” and “when do I need to know it”? There is no simple answer, but a good place to start is knowing how many different sources of current events you should have on hand at all times. If you start with a base of knowledge that’s manageable and appropriate for your career, you’ll be much better prepared when it comes time to write or report.
Know the National News Cycle: Trends & Events in the News Cycle
The first thing a journalist should know is how the news cycle works at the national level. The news cycle for news is what generates the latest stories and the hottest political topics that are desperately needed for any major media outlet. As a general rule, the national news cycle for now might look like so:
What Happened in the News Cycle?
After a major event happens, like some sort of national tragedy or political scandal, there are usually a few days where everything is centered around that topic. Reporters will then use this time to write their best coverage on the topic and to find out what other outlets are reporting on these same stories. They may also be able to get some helpful insight from other reporters who are covering these issues as well.
