Statements Strike In The PISA Report

Philippines was one of the country who participated in the said international assessment of basic education and it was depressing that the students from Philippines got the lowest score in reading, and second lowest in both mathematics and science.

The statements that strike me the most in the PISA report when I read it, is the result wherein students from the Philippines were got lowest score from reading. It only means that Filipino’s literacy is low, they should do some actions to enhance their capabilities especially in reading because it is serious problem for the education sector of our country. The basic education encounters a lot of challenges over the years that’s why some of the students are not good in reading and they have difficulties that should be given focuses. According to the findings, over 80% of the students in the Philippines did not even reach the minimum level of proficiency in reading and it was a shocking results since a lot of Filipino’s were skillful and intelligent in many fields.

According to Frederick Sotto Perez, president of the Reading Association of the Philippines, said this was the first time that the country joined the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). And it was dismal to know that students from Philippines ranked last among 79 countries in a global survey of reading comprehension because according to some Scholars, Filipino students are more used to narrative instead of informative text materials. Perez told ANC’s Early Edition that, “The texts (in the exam) are mainly informational and the evaluation of the text and understanding revolved on informational text and not narrative, to which our students are used to in the Philippines.” Many people are alarmed with the said result since they all want to improve the education system in our country to ensure that it will not happen again and wants to focus more in a reflective education, wherein students should be expose and taught expository texts that focus on factual information. We should let our students practice in terms of reading to develop them into fluent readers. They should provide enough reading materials like encyclopedia and digital texts to cope with the global demand in terms of reading comprehension. Schools and teachers should ensure that they give focuses on nurturing students skills in many aspects especially in reading to improve the literacy of Filipinos.

2. What insights may be derived from the report?

Some insights that I may derived from the report is that the education department should create a back-up plan to ensure that students could learn attentively in their basic education. They should think various ways to make students from the Philippines enhance their literacy for them to be able to achieve their desired educational goals. They should give focus in improving every student education so that when time comes that Philippines will try to participate again in PISA then, we will not be able to felt dismal with the results. Education sector of the Philippines try their best to produce good-quality of students but some they are lacking in some aspect like providing what’s student’s needs, and enough reading materials. They should try to find a factor that could affect the student’s performance in taking the assessment or in learning so we could make a solution and we will be able to mend it. In order to improve the Philippine education system, the government and the department of education should ensure to build more rooms intended only for Math, Science, and Reading to provide a place for the students to learn and enhance their poor skills in that particular area.

3. As a future teacher, what steps must be taken to improve the literacy of the Filipinos?

Motivation and choices plays an important role in improving individual’s reading. As an English teacher, I want my students to enjoy while reading various texts, I want them to read more since it helps them to build their vocabularies and enhance their fluency in certain language. As a future teacher, the steps that I must be taken to improve the literacy of Filipinos, I have come up with some ideas to promote and encourage students to independent reading inside the campus or my class. One step to promote independent reading is to create an environment rich in literacy in every classroom.  We could make it possible through printing, word walls like motivational quotes, bulletin board full of sticky notes where they can write their personalities and dreams to be, displaying good books and reading materials. By this, we could support their academic growth and provide setting that motivates them to speak, listen, read, write in a creative way. We could at least build a friendly classroom which invites and rich in printed words and texts that supports individual learnings. Another suggestion is to encourage students in reading aloud. This will help the teachers know how he/she act outs the reading inside the classroom. It is also a good way to spend time with the learner to teach the proper way of reading the words, and help them to expose in a vocabulary that they often hear or read. It gives us opportunities for rich discussion and vocabularies. Lastly, I will encourage them to read widely. Some students don’t read beyond their favorite genre and author. They were stuck up in reading only those kind of stuffs and I need to encourage them to read outside their preferred books. Reading various types of text enhance student’s vocabularies and introduce them to a broader knowledge, that’s why I have to open their eyes to see and read other genres and author’s works by bringing examples and let them to explore it.
